The role of the arrester is to limit overvoltage to protect electrical equipment. Valve type arresters and zinc oxide arresters are used for the protection of substations and power plants. They are mainly used to limit atmospheric overvoltage in systems of 220KV and below, and are also used to limit operating overvoltage in ultra-high voltage systems.
